US Visa (B1/B2) Interview in Dubai & Abu Dhabi: Questions and Tips
Contents of the article
People spend weeks gathering papers for a US visa interview and then get about two minutes at the window. Sounds unfair, but that’s how it works. The officer has a queue, a screen, and a few questions, and they’ll make up their mind fast. So at the window, what you say matters more than what you carry.
Topics covered on this page include the questions that will be asked, how to respond without seeming too rehearsed, what to include in your folder, who qualifies for an exemption from the interview this year, and the costs involved. If you have not yet applied, check out our US visa from Dubai guide.
What to Expect at Your US Visa Interview in the UAE
US visa interviews in the UAE happen at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the US Consulate General in Dubai. You’ll be asked a few questions in a couple of minutes. They come down to four things:
- why you’re going,
- what keeps you in the UAE or your home country,
- who is paying,
- where you’ve been before.
Booking comes first, and you can only schedule US visa interview appointment slots in your country of nationality or residence. Once the slot is fixed, be careful about the door. The door is strict and doesn’t permit any type of bag, phone, smartwatch, laptop, or tablet to enter. You should not arrive more than 15 minutes before your slot – early arrivals are not let in either. You need a photo ID with you.
Behind the whole thing sits Section 214(b) of US immigration law. The officer starts from the assumption that you might want to stay, and your job is to show ties to your home country that say otherwise: work, family, a home.

Common US B1/B2 Visa Interview Questions
The typical questions at a US visa interview Dubai applicants attend are plain ones. Why are you going to the US? How long for? Who pays? What’s your job? Do you know anyone there? What brings you back to the UAE? Officers hold your answers up against your DS-160 form, so even small mismatches stand out. Here’s how the questions group together, and what each group is really testing:
What does a good answer sound like? Short. Something like these (don’t copy them, they’re only here to show the length):
- Purpose: “I am attending a three-day trade fair in Chicago and then visiting a friend in New York. I fly back to Dubai on 20 March.”
- Funding: “My employer pays for the flights, and I cover the hotel from my savings.”
- Ties: “I have worked at the same company in Dubai for six years, and my family lives here.”
How to Answer US Visa Interview Questions – Top Tips
Be honest, be brief, and match your DS-160. One or two sentences per answer is plenty. Say what ties you to the UAE (job, family, residence visa), stay calm, and don’t recite a speech. Take your documents, but hand them over only if asked. Some things people forget:
- Stop once you’ve answered. Silence is fine.
- Before your US visa interview appointment in Dubai, read your DS-160 again: dates, employer, salary, and addresses are where people trip up.
- Learn your itinerary: which cities, which dates, where you’re staying.
- Dress neatly, arrive on time (not early).
- Don’t know the answer? Say so. A guess that contradicts your form is worse than “I’m not sure”.

Tip from a First Visa Service specialist:
The interview is won on ties, not paperwork. Officers rarely read your bank statements in 3 minutes – they read your answers. Be able to say, in one sentence, exactly why you will come back to the UAE.
Documents to Bring to Your US Visa Interview
The documents required for US visa interview day: make two piles: a core set for everyone, and proof of your life in the UAE that the officer may never ask for. The core set is a valid passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, the fee receipt, and your photo, per the State Department. What goes in the folder:
- Valid passport, plus old passports.
- DS-160 confirmation page.
- Interview appointment letter.
- Fee receipt.
- One recent photo that meets the specifications.
- UAE residence visa and Emirates ID.
- Supporting papers: employment letter or NOC, bank statements, trip plan, an invitation if you have one.
US Visa Interview Waiver (“Dropbox”) – Who Still Qualifies in 2026
Since 1 October 2025, most applicants have to appear in person. A US visa interview waiver is still possible if you’re renewing a B1/B2 visa within 12 months of its expiry, apply where you live, and have never been refused. And even then, the officer can still ask you to come in. The State Department’s interview waiver update spells out the conditions. You must:
- renew a B1, B2, or B1/B2 visa within 12 months of the old visa’s expiry;
- have held a previous visa issued for full validity;
- be at least 18 years old;
- apply in your country of nationality or usual residence;
- have no prior refusal and no apparent ineligibility.
Miss one point and you’re back to a normal interview. If your old visa expired more than a year ago, don’t even count on the waiver. We’ve put the details for UAE residents in our guide to renewing your US visa from the UAE.
US Visa Fees from the UAE (2026)
Before your US B1 B2 visa interview appointment, you pay the fee: USD 185 for the B1/B2 application (MRV), non-refundable. There’s also a USD 250 Visa Integrity Fee created by a 2025 US budget law, but it’s being collected unevenly, so ask at booking whether it applies to you. If it does, expect about USD 435 in total.
The State Department’s own fee page shows only the USD 185, so check it on the day you pay.
Why US Visa Interviews Get Refused (Section 214(b)) and What to Do
Most B1/B2 refusals are Section 214(b) refusals, meaning the officer didn’t believe you’d go home. Weak ties, answers that disagree with the form, and unclear finances mean you missed the requirements for US visa interview approval. It’s not a permanent ban. But every new application costs a new fee, so wait until something has actually changed.
If you get refused:
- Ask what the officer found unconvincing and write it down right away.
- Give it time. A new job, more travel history, or clearer funding can change the picture, and the State Department says you may reapply if circumstances have changed.
- Plan for the cost: you pay the application fee again each time.
- Go through your answers again so they match your DS-160.

FAQ
How long is the US visa interview in Dubai?
The actual interview takes just a few minutes. But the entire process takes longer due to the security screening that will be required. Do not arrive any earlier than 15 minutes prior to your allocated time slot, since the candidates can enter the premises only at their allocated time.
What questions are asked in a US B1/B2 visa interview?
Short, direct ones: why you’re going, how long you’ll stay, who pays. The officer may also ask about your job, family, and earlier trips. Answer only what was asked, and keep every detail in line with your DS-160 form, since that’s what they compare it to.
How can I pass my US visa interview in the UAE?
While no one can guarantee approval, there are certain steps you can take to increase your chances. First, be honest, provide short answers, and be aware of your schedule. In one simple sentence, explain your connection to the UAE, have all your documents in order, and remain cool.
Can I get a US visa without an interview in the UAE?
Not always. The waiver applies in most cases to the renewal of B1/B2 visas within 12 months from the expiration date of the existing visa, if the applicant is at least 18 years old, has had no rejections before, and files an application from their home country.
What documents do I need for the US visa interview?
Passport, DS-160 confirmation page, appointment letter, fee receipt, and photograph. Provide evidence of ties in the form of a letter of employment and/or NOC and bank statements. Place all these documents in one folder, as the Dubai Consulate does not accept bags, and be ready to provide evidence of ties.
How much is the US visa fee in the UAE in 2026?
The B1/B2 application fee stands at $185, which is nonrefundable. The Visa Integrity Fee, set at $250 and introduced through an Act of Law in 2025, has not been enforced universally, so it is advised that one check upon booking whether the fee applies to their situation.
